Breast Reconstruction Goal

There are many steps in the breast reconstruction process.
DR. KHOOBEHI: Breast reconstruction patients are typically patients that have lost breast tissue. The most common is patients that they had breast cancer and require having a mastectomy or mastectomy and radiation. These patients, when they come in, they have lost most of the breast volume, and also they have lost the skin.
Typically when discussed with these patients, they can have two options. One is that require an implant or implant material for breast reconstruction, and the other option is going to be using their own tissue. I've been doing breast reconstruction for the last ten years, and the most common procedure I like to offer my patients is using their own tissue. And I perform a procedure called deep flap, it’s technically a very complicated procedure, but to make it very simple is taking the tissue from the abdomen and using it for breast reconstruction. And the difference from this procedure from the older technique is that we don't take any muscle, only skin and fat from the abdomen is used for breast reconstruction. That way the patient doesn't have any problem with the loss of muscle in the abdomen area.
These patients typically come back later on for nipple reconstruction and they have a very natural look, and it's because it's their own tissue. As time passes, it looks more and more natural.
