Breast Reconstruction Goal
02:15
There are many steps in the breast reconstruction process.
DR. KHOOBEHI: For breast reconstruction, I offer to my patients a technique that is the most advanced technique in breast reconstruction. The most common technique for breast reconstruction at this date is use an implant, but all the studies show that implants have problems later on, because the patient doesn't have enough skin, and especially if they have radiation. So I offer my patients a technique that is using their own tissue, using the tissue from the abdomen without taking the muscle, and that's the key difference between this technique versus older techniques that they use the muscle from the abdominal area for breast reconstruction. I've been doing that for the last ten years and have had very good results with that one.
For patients that have had breast cancer, the best technique would be to have a combined procedure, do the mastectomy and breast reconstruction at the same time, and that gives them the best possible result, because you're not going to have a loss of skin. And typically this procedure is performed in a hospital, patient stays for up to four days, and able to go home after that. We have patients that come from all over the United States for procedures and if the patient is looking to this procedure, and if they Google it under DIEP flap, D-I-E-P, they can find more information. And it's a procedure that is in the cutting age of the breast reconstruction.
